USP <800> Deadline is Fast Approaching

USP 800 Compliant Pass Through Cabinets are an integral part of the USP PHarmacy <800> and <797> requierment.

The new USP chapter 800 Hazardous Drugs – Handling in Healthcare Settings,  official date for compliance  is December 1, 2019.

Hospital Pharmacies and independent compounding Pharmacies  nationwide are working hard to prepare for the revised USP standards that are set to take effect on  December 1, 2019.

Are you in compliance?   Requirements for hazardous drug handling have been part of standards for pharmaceutical compounding of sterile preparation in USP <797> since 2004.  They now appear separately in General Chapter <800>, which was released in 2016 and will be official beginning December 1, 2019. The U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) is an independent organization that sets standards for medication quality and safety.

The purpose of the chapter is to describe practice and quality standards for handling hazardous drugs in health care settings and help promote patient safety, worker safety, and environmental protection. Chapter <800> was written to protect all workers, patients and the general public who may be accessing facilities where hazardous drugs (HDs) are prepared.

The chapter applies to all health care personnel who handle HD preparations and all entities that store, prepare, transport, or administer HDs, such as pharmacies, hospitals and other health care institutions, patient treatment clinics, physicians’ practice facilities, or veterinarians’ offices.

Pharmacy USP compliance

Make sure your pharmacy is in compliance.

CMP’s USP 800 Compliant Pass Through assists in meeting requierments.

The pharmacies needed to become compliant with two new pharmacy standards established by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP): USP 797, which focuses on sterile compounding preparations; and USP 800, which focuses on the safe handling of hazardous drugs. Adherence to these standards are evaluated by The Joint Commission (TJC) during reviews to ensure that health care facilities make the process of handling and distributing drugs safer for patients and staff alike.

Architects and the directors of pharmacy managers are finding  a solution by utilizing CMP’s USP 800 Compliant Pass Through Cabinets and chambers. These Stainless Steel Pass Throughs with electronic interlock have been the industry standard since the beginning of time.

USP 800 Compliant Pass Through cabinets

Pass-throughs are essentially a cabinet built into an interior wall that can open into both rooms. It is imperative that doors in one room remain locked while doors are open in the adjacient room.  For pharmacies, their primary purpose is to facilitate the safe transfer of drugs and supplies into and out of rooms while maintaining the appropriate pressurization of the rooms on either side of the Pas-Through. Pass-through cabinets reduce the amount of foot traffic into and out of the cleanroom, which can help prevent potentially harmful particles from entering.

USP <800> Hazardous Drugs – Handling in Healthcare Settings

Developed to protect healthcare workers, patients, and the environment from exposure of hazardous drugs through the use of engineering controls, work practices and personal protective equipment (PPE).

As we get closer to December of 2019, facilities will continue to adapt their hazardous drug rooms to meet USP 800 compliance. CMP Pass throughs are safe for use in USP 800 Pharmacies.
